The ministry of the church cannot be accomplished without the service of its members. The church is dependent upon many people working behind the scenes to maintain the building, manage finances, organize events, and facilitate worship services. The word volunteer has come to speak of a voluntary choice to give your time and talents for free toward a good cause. While we use this term as Christians today, the Bible calls this kind of behavior a stewardship, responsibility, or service. Volunteering is typically viewed as going beyond your responsibilities, to do something over and above your duty. In other words, volunteering is optional. However, Christian service is not optional, it is commanded of God and is the calling of every Christian.
“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.”
1 Peter 4:10-11
“For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.”
Romans 12:4-8
As a Christian, it is not a matter of whether you will serve the church, it is a matter of how you will serve the church. Everyone has something to share. Whether time or talents, God has equipped you to be actively serving the body of Christ.
What follows on this page are areas of service that could use your help. Please reach out to us if you can serve the church and bring honor to God in any of these ways.
