Teaching in Parables

What are parables and what purpose did they serve in Jesus' teaching? Jesus said to his disciples, "To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables, so that they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand, lest they should turn and be forgiven." How should we understand what Jesus is saying here? What is the secret of the kingdom of God that Jesus spoke of in parables? These questions and more are answered as we look at this text.

Mark

The gospel of Mark tells us of the person and work of Jesus Christ. Under the inspiration of the Spirit, Mark presents Jesus as the Son of God and the suffering Servant sent to save his people. Mark stresses the authority of Jesus, his great sacrifice, and what it means to be his disciple. This book was given to make and encourage disciples of Jesus, and this sermon series seeks to do the same by proclaiming Mark's message for today's generation.

Tim Stephens is the senior pastor of Fairview Baptist Church. Tim grew up on a farm in Eastern Ontario and has graduated with a Computer Engineering degree from Queen’s University, a Masters of Divinity degree from Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary, and is currently pursuing his Doctor of Ministry in Expository Preaching at the Master’s Seminary.
